Hosted by Joe (Kings Road’s unofficial Minister of Linen Appreciation) and Debbie (camera operator, style enabler, and professional “yes that actually works together” nodder), broadcasting from Leighton Buzzard but spiritually somewhere between the French Riviera and a very stylish Spanish terrace. But first... WATCH THE VIDEO HERE 1. Start with breathable fabrics (your future self will thank you) Heatwave dressing begins with fabrics. Look for: linen (slightly wrinkled = socially acceptable) lightweight cotton crinkle textures (no ironing = happiness) Brands like Masai and Bibico excel at pieces that feel like air but look like style. 2. Neutral doesn’t mean boring — it means base camp Think: sand cream soft grey ochre From there, you build personality. A neutral outfit is like a blank canvas… but a very expensive one that already fits well.       3. Add colour like you mean it Heatwave styling thrives on contrast. Try: blue + green cream + cobalt green + natural linen If you hesitate, that’s normal. If it looks slightly “wrong” on the hanger, that’s often a good sign.           4. Mix brands, not rules One of the easiest ways to modernise your wardrobe: don’t match sets too perfectly. Pair: structured trousers from Red Buttonwith soft flowing tops from Indi & Cold The contrast creates effortlessness (even if it took effort,we won’t tell).     5. This week's Style It Live was originally scheduled for our usual Friday evening slot, but with temperatures climbing faster than a Wimbledon queue, we made what felt like a very civilised decision to bring things forward and enjoy lunch in the garden first. Naturally, our conversation quickly descended into a surprisingly passionate debate about ice cream. Was the classic Magnum still king? Is pistachio the most underrated flavour of all time? Does a Fab count as an ice cream or is it technically a lolly? These are the questions that matter. Once we'd solved absolutely none of them, we turned our attention to something we do know a thing or two about: dressing for hot weather. But first... WATCH THE VIDEO HERE Why We Love Linen There is a reason linen returns every summer as the ultimate warm-weather fabric. It's breathable, lightweight, comfortable and effortlessly stylish. More importantly, it allows you to remain looking elegant while everyone else is wondering if it's socially acceptable to sit inside the fridge. Not all linen is created equal, however. We particularly love linens with texture and character,  the kind designed to look beautifully relaxed rather than perfectly pressed. We like to call it "continental creasing"; that sophisticated, lived-in look that says you've spent the afternoon strolling through an Italian piazza rather than wrestling with an ironing board.   Colour Therapy Summer dressing doesn't have to mean beige. This season we're loving cornflower blues, turquoise, blue, washed emerald greens and soft neutrals that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. The beauty of linen is that it allows colour to shine while still feeling relaxed and wearable.     The Great Ironing Divide No linen discussion would be complete without mentioning ironing. Our audience quickly split into two camps: those who love ironing and those who firmly believe life is too short. We're somewhere in the middle. The secret is choosing beautiful quality linens that are designed to embrace a little texture. A few gentle creases add character. Hard, sharp creases are another story entirely.   The Official Style It Live Verdict By the end of the afternoon we'd showcased beautiful dresses ( currently only available in our Leighton Buzzard boutique), relaxed trousers, lightweight jackets, linen gauze pieces and enough styling inspiration to see us through the rest of summer. Had we solved the ice cream debate? Not entirely. But Magnum remains a strong contender, Mini Milks still have loyal supporters, and apparently there are people who genuinely enjoy ironing. The bed has disappeared under a mountain of "just in case" outfits. You've packed for blazing sunshine, unexpected rain, a surprise invitation to a yacht party, a casual lunch, a fancy dinner, and possibly a minor royal engagement. Sound familiar? Last week's Style It Live tackled one of the biggest summer style challenges: how to create a holiday wardrobe that works for everything without requiring excess baggage fees. The good news? The answer isn't more clothes. It's better clothes But first... WATCH THE VIDEO HERE The Secret to Holiday Packing When you're at home, your wardrobe can absorb a styling crisis. On holiday, every piece needs to earn its place. That's why we're big believers in building a capsule wardrobe around versatile pieces that can mix, match and multitask. A coordinated set can become three or four completely different outfits. A great dress can take you from sightseeing to supper. A lightweight jacket can save the day when the air conditioning is set to Arctic conditions or the British summer remembers it's British. The aim isn't restriction. It's freedom. Less time wondering what to wear. More time enjoying the holiday. Choose a Colour Palette and Stick to It We know. It sounds sensible. But stay with us. One of the easiest ways to maximise your holiday wardrobe is to work within a simple colour palette. Navy, cream, camel, black and white were the stars of our latest Style It Live, creating a foundation that allows almost everything to work together. Add a few carefully chosen pops of colour and suddenly your wardrobe feels varied without becoming chaotic. The result? More outfits. Fewer pieces. Less stress. And more room for holiday shopping. Dresses: The Ultimate Holiday Hero If holiday wardrobes had an MVP, it would probably be the dress. Throw it on and you're dressed. No matching required. No complicated styling decisions. Just instant outfit. Whether you're heading for a cruise, a city break, a beachside dinner or a festival weekend, a great dress can do almost everything. Pair it with trainers during the day, add jewellery and a jacket for the evening, and you've got a completely different look with minimal effort. We're particularly fond of dresses that don't require an advanced degree in ironing. Which brings us neatly to our next point. Fabrics Matter More Than You Think Nothing ruins holiday optimism quite like opening your suitcase and discovering everything looks like it has spent the flight wrestling with itself. Travel-friendly fabrics are worth their weight in gold. The best holiday pieces are the ones that can be rolled, folded, squeezed into a corner of your suitcase and still emerge looking presentable. We love fabrics with texture, movement and a little forgiveness built in. The kind that work hard while you concentrate on enjoying yourself.       Comfortable Shoes Are Not Optional There comes a point on every holiday when style and comfort must learn to coexist. Usually around step 12,000. Whether you're exploring cities, wandering around markets, walking along the coast or simply navigating airports, comfortable footwear is one of the smartest investments you can make. Beautiful shoes are wonderful. Beautiful shoes that don't make you regret your life choices by lunchtime are even better.   Don't Forget the Finishing Touches Accessories are where the magic happens. A scarf can become a wrap, a sarong, a travel blanket or an evening layer. A statement necklace can transform the simplest outfit. A practical crossbody bag can take you from airport to dinner without missing a beat. And sunglasses? Let's just say there are very few situations improved by squinting.     The Great Holiday Packing Myth Perhaps the biggest myth of all is that we need more options. Most of us wear the same favourite pieces repeatedly while travelling. The difference is that the right pieces don't feel repetitive. They feel reliable. They work together effortlessly. They make getting dressed easy. They allow us to spend less time thinking about clothes and more time enjoying where we are. One week we're melting in 30-degree sunshine. The next, we're reaching for jackets and wondering if summer has packed up and gone home. Easy wins.       Styling Tip #4: Let One Piece Do the Talking The Traffic People dress featured during the live is a perfect example. Your feet will thank you.     The Great Hot Shorts Debate A surprisingly passionate discussion emerged during the live about whether hot shorts should make a comeback. The audience response? Mostly horrified laughter. The consensus seemed to be: ✔️ Relaxed shorts? Yes.✔️ Tailored longer-length shorts? Absolutely.✔️ Hot shorts? Proceed with caution. And not fake summer either!  Not the kind where you optimistically leave the house in linen and return home hypothermic three hours later. We mean proper summer. Sunshine. Warm evenings. Courtyard weather. Flip-flop weather. Naturally, here at Kings Road Fashions, we responded in the only reasonable way possible: by talking about tops for an entire evening. But not just fashion tops. Not “stand perfectly still and don’t spill hummus on it” tops. We’re talking: breathable tops flattering tops work-to-evening tops holiday-packing tops “I don’t know what to wear” tops and those magical tops that somehow make your existing trousers feel brand new. But first... WATCH THE VIDEO HERE The Golden Rule of Occasion Dressing: “Effortless, but make it intentional” This session’s unspoken motto was clear: nobody wants to look overdone, but nobody wants to look like they’ve “just popped out for bread” either (unless it’s a very chic sourdough situation). The trick? Elevated fabrics, easy silhouettes, and pieces that behave well from car seat to cocktail hour. The Great Summer Styling Secret? Start with the top. Most women come into the boutique saying:“I just need a couple of tops.” And honestly? Fair enough. Because a great top does heavy lifting. A fresh white cotton blouse suddenly revives old jeans.A soft linen shell transforms plain navy trousers.A printed blouse makes black workwear feel less “corporate spreadsheet” and more “woman who owns expensive olives.” The right top changes the whole mood. White Tops: The Unsung Heroes of Summer If summer wardrobes had a cast list, the white top would be the reliable best friend who quietly solves everyone’s problems. White works with:✔ prints✔ linen✔ denim✔ colour✔ neutrals✔ “I got dressed in seven minutes” mornings Our advice?Own several. Not identical ones — that would be unhinged even for us — but variations: sleeveless textured cottons soft tees crisp shirts airy voile blouses relaxed linen layers A good white top is basically fashion paracetamol. Linen: Wrinkled but Wonderful Now let’s address the linen conversation. Yes, it creases.Yes, you will sit down once and immediately look “artistically rumpled.” But honestly?That’s part of the charm. Linen says:“I summer in Europe.”Even if you’re actually in Milton Keynes eating a supermarket meal deal. Styling tip:Balance relaxed linen with sharper pieces.A structured waistcoat over wide linen trousers keeps things polished instead of “accidental allotment chic.”       The “Desk to Rosé” Wardrobe Gone are the days of completely separate wardrobes for work and weekends. Now we want: one outfit multiple purposes minimal ironing maximum compliments Soft printed shirts, elevated jersey tops and lightweight co-ords are perfect for this. Especially on Zoom calls. Because from the waist up?You look like the CEO of a Scandinavian design company. From the waist down?Possibly elasticated shorts and one slipper. And honestly, we support that.   Co-ords: For Women Who Can’t Be Bothered to Make Decisions Summer styling becomes significantly easier when somebody else has already matched the outfit for you. Co-ords are brilliant because: they look instantly polished you can wear them together or separately with basics and they create approximately 47 outfits from 3 pieces This is what we call:“capsule wardrobe maths.” Very technical.     The Trouser Situation We need to discuss trousers briefly because frankly they deserve their own fan club. A good trouser changes posture, confidence and occasionally personality. This season we’re loving: barrel legs soft crops relaxed tailoring fluid wide legs soft cotton textures And importantly:tops are shorter again. Not tiny.Not “early 2000s trauma.”Just balanced. Wider trousers need proportion, so shorter boxier tops often work beautifully. HOWEVER. If you prefer longer tops, fear not.   Final Thoughts  At one point during the live, while discussing summer blouses, somebody researched the origins of “Adam’s Ale,” someone else forgot the phrase “sandwich bag,” and we nearly abandoned fashion entirely to become a comedy duo. So in many ways, the evening perfectly captured summer dressing itself: a little bit chaotic,a little bit relaxed,and much more enjoyable when you stop overthinking it. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is clothes that let you enjoy your life. Clothes you can wear to lunch, work, drinks, holidays, garden parties, poetry nights, supermarket trips and spontaneous courtyard soirées. And ideally…tops that don’t require a granny cardigan. Somewhere between discussing occasion outfits and wondering whether we’ve all been to a duck race expecting actual ducks, a surprisingly useful styling philosophy emerges: life is full of events… so your wardrobe should be ready for all of them. From Wimbledon to weddings, poetry nights to pub garden music sets, the brief is the same: look like yourself, just slightly more elevated—preferably without needing an instruction manual and definitely without sacrificing comfort. One outfit could easily cover: A wedding A race day A poetry night where you might have to read something profound Or a spontaneous “let’s sit in a garden with a drink and pretend it’s summer” The secret? Co-ords and mix-and-match separates. Because nothing says “I have my life together” like owning trousers that work with three different tops and none of them technically matching—but all of them looking intentional. Styling tips from the Style It Live school of fashion 1. If in doubt, add textureEmbroidery, crinkle fabrics, subtle sheen—anything that catches the light is doing more work than you are. Let it. 2. Co-ords are basically fashion shortcutsA matching set from Traffic People or Mama B gives instant “put together” energy. Break them up later and pretend you planned it all along. 3. One statement piece per outfit is enoughA sculptural sleeve, a bold print, or a dramatic wide-leg trouser—pick your fighter. Not all of them at once unless you’re headlining something. 4. Dresses are never just dressesA flowing piece from Bize or PSophia can go from “Chelsea Flower Show elegant” to “garden party casual” with nothing more than a shoe swap and a strategic bag choice. 5. Comfortable can still be dangerous (in a good way)Elasticated waists, soft tailoring, and breathable fabrics mean you can survive an 8-hour event and still look like you arrived fresh. No one needs to know the truth. The real takeaway: style is situational… and slightly chaotic Between the rails of elegant trousers, floaty dresses, and “this could go to a race or a very fancy sandwich lunch”, one truth kept surfacing: clothes should work as hard as your diary does. And if your diary includes nothing more glamorous than a beer garden, a coffee, or a spontaneous duck race (plastic ducks only, unfortunately), then frankly—you still deserve a good outfit. Because as Joe and Debbie proved, fashion isn’t really about perfection. It’s about having something fabulous to wear while you misidentify strangers, laugh too loudly into a microphone, and confidently commit to plans that may or may not involve cake. And honestly? That’s the best kind of styling advice there is.
